About the Project
A Sydney to Hobart racing yacht needed a custom 7-metre keel delivered by race day – no extensions, no exceptions. The ultra high-strength material designed for the vessel required tight property specifications, critical to performance. The extreme hardness of the material and the pure scale of the keel made the machining challenging. The complex shape required advanced machining with 5-axis programming, which very few Australian facilities can handle.
Working with our overseas forging partners, we implemented continuous quality inspections to nail the exact material specifications. Our programmers and machinists handled the tough material and shape with our large 5-axis CNC machines. It involved round-the-clock operations, six days per week, to meet the deadline.
The keel arrived race-ready and on time. Its precision engineering and material properties deliver the performance advantages the design intended, proving our capacity to handle large-scale, technically demanding projects within tight timeframes.
